Carrot

Daucus carota
Umbelliferae

Temperature

  • Germination: 13-18 °C
  • Growth: 18- 20 °C

Light

  • Carrots do best with plenty of light
  • 10 to 12 hours per day are recommended for growing indoors with Bulbo lights.

Soil

  • Use a mixed, well-drained soil. Use moderate amounts of organic compost to fertilize.
  • For carrots, we recommend this soil mix.

Time Of Growth

  • Expect about 6 to 10 days for germination and about 60 to 70 days from seed to harvest, depending on variety.

HOW TO START

  • Carrots can be sown directly into pots if using a pot adequately tall to accommodate carrot roots.
  • Create small holes in the soil about 3-4 cm apart, so that the carrot roots can mature.
  • Plant two or three seeds per hole to increase chances of germination.
  • Keep the soil moist by covering the container with plastic wrap until the first sprouts appear.

WATERING & CARE

  • Thin out the carrots when you see that the sprouts reach a height of 3 cm, leaving only one seedling in each hole. As they grow, check that the soil is never too wet to prevent the root rot.
  • Be careful that the roots do not become exposed from the soil. Light can cause them to become green and inedible. If this happens, add more soil or gently push down into the soil so they are covered.

How To Use

  • Carrots are great eaten raw, shredded into a salad or slaw, or roasted along with other root veggies. They are also a great addition to fresh juices or smoothies.
